Does your web designer have any true business experience?

Web designers need business experience.

It never ceases to amaze me how many companies large and small hire a web designer with zero business experience. A website is a valuable business asset and your web design firm should have a good background in business so they can truly build you a site that will positively effect your business sales and profits. They should be able to guide you in your web presence promotions. More importantly, they should be able to listen to your needs and goals, communicate their ideas and create solutions that will help you grow your business.

Three Main Objectives of a Website Design

A website should have three main objectives. Think of these as a triangle with the top being your most important. In other words, it is what you want your visitor to ideally take away from visiting your website. This primary objective should be the one with the highest revenue potential. For example, services companies will want form submissions for quotes.

The second layer includes actions that visitors can do to reach the main objective. While they are indirectly related to your business goals, they are important to the overall user experience.

The third layer, or the base of the triangle, is where you would place your tertiary objectives. These can be time spent on the website, or downloading some information about your product or service. While these actions don’t directly result in revenue, they are necessary to drive engagement on your website.

If your website designer or website design firm doesn’t understand the business objectives, or how they are achieved with a website’s design, they will fall short on both the user’s experience and your objectives.

Visitors need help navigating your website.

New visitors to your website need to have a clear path to your primary objective. If your web designer or website design firm doesn’t create an intuitive website design, visitors may not make it to the primary objective.

The three questions your website must answer for your visitors to successfully navigate your website.

  1. Why are you here
  2. What you can do here
  3. What you should do

Final Thoughts

The problem with a web designer will little or no business experience is they have no idea what these objectives mean and have no idea why they are even important to your business. Therefore, they cannot create a website that will help you grow your business.

Can You Call Your Web Developer?

Businesses need a direct line to website developers.

I am not sure why it is, but I hear from clients every day how so many web developers don’t have a phone. I, too, have noticed that there seems to be a new trend of web designers/web developers operating strictly by email with so many freelancers.

With 20 years of experience, I cannot imagine how this would fit into the creative process.

The interaction between developers and their clients is deeply rooted in strong communication. I have always felt that to create something truly unique, something that makes or re-creates a brand for a client, is created when the web designer and web developer genuinely connect with their client and gain a proper understanding of their client’s business. It is virtually impossible to convey this level of detail through email.

Web developer with no phone means it time for a change.

In fact, it’s definitely time for a change. You should be able to speak to your developer directly when discussing edits to your site, it’s too easy to have miscommunication when discussing the little details that must be ironed out between client and their web developer during the creative process.

Think about it, if you find an error on your website, do you really want to send your development agency an email and have to wait for a response? Don’t let a lack of communication with your web developer hold your website back from being all it can be. It’s your website, your business, it’s time to get on the phone with a web developer that cares and get something done!
